1. You can visit the Oktoberfest
Munich is the home of the Oktoberfest. The famous beer festival in October is THE event that shouldn’t be missed. You’ll be living in the vibrant heart of where all the action takes place. It could be worse, right?
2. Try a lot of German food
Do you want to try Bavarian food? Of course, you do! We are sure that you’d love to eat the hearty “Schweinebraten” or “Schnitzel”. Ever heard about traditional Bavarian food like “Weißwurst”? If not, you should definitely come and change that! Even though you prefer a different cuisine you won’t starve since we have a high range of international restaurants in the city.
3. Find out that Germans acutally do have a sense of humor
True or false? We are punctual, love rules, structure, football, and beer. Yes, we admit it, some stereotypes about Germans do exist. Coming to Munich you might realize that we actually DO have a sense of humor. Besides, we are not always on time (especially regarding lectures) and don’t (always) wear Dirndl and Lederhosen when going to university.
4. From summer to winter: Weather in Munich
Talking about clichés, Germany is known as a cold country where it’s always raining. Frankly, the climate in Bavaria is milder than in northern Germany. The weather in Germany covers all four seasons, from long hot summer days to cozy rainy days and snow. This means: you can bring your bathing suit as well as your skiing gear if you plan to spend a year in Munich!
5. Wear Dirndl and Lederhosen
You cannot come to Munich without going to the Oktoberfest and you cannot leave without wearing the traditional Bavarian clothes for once. This is the once in a lifetime experience we’ve been talking about in the beginning. Just kidding, but promise, it’ll be fun wearing the so-called Tracht and feeling like a real “Münchner”.
6. Enjoy Munich’s nightlife
Munich is an economic powerhouse, home to around 22,000 high-tech companies in automotive, electronics, engineering, telecommunications, aviation, and more. Yet you’ll find happy residents with a healthy work-life balance. This shows in the number of clubs and bars. Many students find their way to enjoy life here. Soon you’ll be one of them? More information about all the leisure activities for students in Munich you’ll find here.
7. Experience the cultural life
We are proud of our Bavarian culture. Tradition and customs are deeply rooted in Bavaria. Wherever you go, you’ll feel the comfortable atmosphere which makes you feel at home. In Munich, people like to enjoy life.
8. Low crime rate
Why Munich? Because it’s rated #1 in Germany for quality of life and is one of the safest cities in Europe. So you don’t have to be afraid to move to a big metropolitan city.
9. Metropolitan city and country vibes
Talking about a metropolitan city: Wandering around the city, you might hear locals say: “Munich is a village.” It’s true, living in Munich you’ll experience a metropolitan city but at the same time, it’s not anonymous. After you spent some time here you’ll notice that you meet people randomly in the English Garden and that it’s easy to get to know others.
10. Nature in the middle of the city
Maybe the “living in a village” feeling also comes from the fact that there is nature everywhere you go. One of the main reasons why we love Munich are the green parks in Munich and the beautiful lakes which allow you to cool down in summer.
11. Explore the breathtaking region
Due to its central location, Munich is the perfect starting point to explore the region and some of the best sights in Germany. With the train, you’ll be everywhere within 1 to 2 hours. How about visiting Salzburg in Austria, the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein or enjoying the jaw-dropping views from the top of the Alps?
12. Live in an international environment
Munich is intercultural. Munich is a very diverse city, where people of all cultures are welcome and you will hear a lot of different languages. We have cinemas that show movies in their original versions. So we’ve got you covered for a rainy day! 😉
13. Try a looooot of German beer
Number 13 out of the 14 reasons why Munich is the perfect city for your semester abroad is obviously beer. For centuries beer has been an important part of the Bavarian culture. Try out the traditional outdoor beer gardens for an authentic “beer experience”.
14. Studying at MUAS
And the best reason for choosing Munich for your semester abroad is…? You guessed it: Studying at our faculty 14! We are the Department of Tourism at the Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS). As the largest academic department of tourism in Germany, we offer you a diversity of courses, practice-orientated teaching, and applied research. Known for our international approach, we want to make you fall in love with the city vibes and feel at home in Munich, just like we do. (oh and study, almost forgot about that point :D)
