…and their insider tips
5. Get a literal overview
Enjoy a nice view of Munich and get an overview of your new home. Walk up the 299 steps of the St. Peter church and see Munich’s most famous landmarks from above or climb the Olympic hill for a stunning view over the Olympic park and stadium.
Of course, there are also a lot of nice rooftop bars to check out. Our favourite for a summer night with good music: Café Vorhölzer on top of the Technical University.
6. Beer gardens!
Munich wouldn’t be Munich without its beer gardens! Sit under chestnut trees, have a Schweinebraten and try Munich’s local beers.
Our tips: Hofbräukeller at Wiener Platz or the Park Café in the city centre.
7. Summer evenings in Munich
If you want to enjoy a nice summer evening somewhere less traditional Bavarian you have plenty of options: Get that vacation feeling in one of Munich’s in- and outdoor beach bars or enjoy the view from the boat Alte Utting, placed on a closed railway bridge. In summer you can also spend your evening watching a movie in an open-air cinema or just hang out with friends at the riverbank of the Isar.
8. Eisbachwelle
Munich, central Europe, no seashore… But did you know that you can actually go surfing in the heart of Munich? Due to a natural step and some modifications, the Eisbach (stream in the English garden) has a stationary wave which is perfect for surfing. And even if you are not an absolute surf pro, there are always “Eisbach Surfer” you can watch, even in winter!
9. Sporty activities
Wanna get active? There are many possibilities to stay fit, have fun and discover new places – even for small or no money! For example yoga classes in changing locations where everyone pays as much as he/she wants to (PopUp Yoga) or free common workouts in Bavarian clothing (Lederhosentraining).
Shitty weather? Then check out the trampolines at AirHop, try bouldering or go for a swim in one of Munich’s indoor swimming pools, for example the beautiful Müller’sches Volksbad.
10. Stay inside
Besides the plenty of nice parks and places, there are also different things to do in Munich when it’s pouring rain or freezing cold. Warm up in the greenhouses of the botanical garden at humid 25°C and stroll by exotic and colourful plants. Or check out the street art at the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art. Many cinemas also show movies in the original (English) language. Our tip: the cute cinema Museum Lichtspiele.
11. 1€ museum Sunday
A cheap way to get to know some of Munich’s cultural offerings is to visit museums on a Sunday, where some offer discounted admission prices, like the three pinakotheks. Many also offer student discounts or are even free to visit! Click here to see an overview.
Not included in the museum Sunday, but definitely worth a visit: The Deutsches Museum, interactively displaying masterpieces of science and technology.
12. BMW Welt
Another rather unconventional but number 1 hotspot for car-enthusiast are the exhibits from the Bavarian car manufacturer BMW. Experience innovative technologies and futuristic cars at the BMW Welt and learn more about the history of the Bavarian car manufacturer at their museum.
13. Home of the FC Bayern Munich
Beer(gardens), fast cars, traditional costumes and the last Bavarian stereotype: football!
Yes, Germans do love a good football game, cheering in the stadium for their favourite team, which in Munich most likely is: the FC Bayern. If you can’t get your hands on tickets you can visit the stadium anywhere. Get a private guided tour and feel like one of the famous football players themselves: have a look into their private changing rooms or feel pure excitement while walking all the way up to the field. Surely you’ll also get some amazing insider tipps!
14. Time to party
At last but not least – Munich’s nightlife! Here you can find what you need; from clubs to bars, Hip-Hip to Electro, fancy to student-friendly prices. Who says Munich isn’t for partying just hasn’t been to the right places. And since the right place is different for everyone, we won’t tell you where to go but tell you where many students go.
Start your evening in one of the bars at Münchner Freiheit (e.g. Barschwein) or in the Maxvorstadt quarter (e.g. StammBar where you can draw your own beer). You’re in the mood for dancing now but it’s a weekday? Let’s go to Milchbar or Pimpernel!
After hours of dancing the party night draws to a close and you want to get home. No problem! Even on weekdays, there are plenty of night buses/trams operating the whole night and you can also get a taxi or Uber.
